Finding God Within the Darkness

Sometimes we feel we are so far from God that He seems miles away.

When we are in the darkness, it seems there is no light to be found. The darkness is terrifying; not because we don’t know what is lurking within, but because we do know what awaits us there: Satan. In these times we feel like we are lost and there is nowhere to go. In these times, we cry out to God only to feel like He can’t even hear us.

In the past two years, my family has lost four amazing people. God called them home to be with Him in Glory.  In this time, I’ve felt I’m constantly within the darkness. I feel like God is within my reach but I can’t grasp onto Him. I feel anger and hurt and all I want is for God to take it away from me. I’ve really felt like I’m angry with God when I know I shouldn’t be.

Jeremiah 29:13 tells us “you will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” When we are trying to find God but there is something holding us back, like being in the darkness and being afraid to reach out for God, we aren’t seeking Him with our whole heart. When we don’t do this, we will never fully find God.

When we’re in the valley or sitting in the darkness, we tend to lose hope that God is there at all. We think all is lost and we are all alone. But something amazing happens when we seek God with all our heart. We get courage and comfort. We begin to see the light that was always there. One of my favorite verses is John 1:5 which says, “the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.”

You see, I have been so far down that it feels like for miles and miles all I can see is darkness. I have been so deep in the valley that I feel as though I will never get out. Each and every time I have sought out God, I have cried and begged Him to show me a way out. And each time, He has. His light can never be distinguished. No matter how much darkness you face, His light will always shine through.  And once you take that light and take that step forward, you will see that no matter how long you’re in the darkness, it will never consume you.

Isaiah 43:2 says, “when you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through fire you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” Now, if God can go through all this with us and never leave us, then why would He leave us alone in the darkness? Why would He not give us a way out? Lucky for us, He does. The way out is Him. While we pass through troubled waters and racing rivers, He will be with us. When we walk through the raging flames of life, we will not be set ablaze. When we walk in the shadows that holds our fears and self-doubt , we will always be able to see a way out as long as we have Him as our light.

Finding your way out of darkness can seem like it’s impossible, but I promise you it’s not. No matter how much you cry out to God and think He doesn’t hear you, He does. No matter how many times you keep looking around to make sure that He is still with you, He will always be there. Darkness can overtake you only if you let it. God’s light will always be inside of you. God’s presence will be with you wherever you go.

When you feel the enemy drawing close and you can see the darkness coming your way, remember to stand your ground and do not be afraid to stand up to the enemy. When you seek out God, remember that if He is with you then you cannot fail. Show the enemy that you are not afraid of the dark because you have an everlasting light inside of you which will always remain. Speak the name of Jesus and walk with your head held high.

Dear Heavenly Father, I ask that you be with those who need you. I ask that you be with them in the valley and be with them in the darkness. I ask that you help them to use the light that is already inside of them. I ask that you give them the strength to stand up for their faith and to be true to who You made them to be. Don’t let the darkness overtake them, Father. Show them that they have the power inside of them to cast the devil out and tell him that he has no authority over Your children. Father, I pray that you give them the courage to look to You in all situations, good or bad. Help their light to shine forevermore knowing that You are inside of them and You will walk beside them no matter where they decide to go. Thank You for all Your abundant blessings. In Your name, Amen.

God bless you all.
